Sandy Hill
Located just Southeast of Ottawa’s downtown core, with its wide range of architectural styles and the presence of many international embassies, Sandy Hill is a diverse neighbourhood. Named after the hill it sits upon – the sandy soil caused by its close proximity to the canal and the Rideau River – Sandy Hill was once Ottawa’s wealthiest neighbourhood. When first established in the early 19th century, Sandy Hill was home to politicians, dignitaries, and the most influential residents of Ottawa.
Over the years, many of the large estates have been converted to apartment buildings to accommodate the University of Ottawa’s growing student population. AS a result the neighbourhood has become a diverse mix of students and working class, accompanied by many dignitaries and affluent who live along the west side.
For University of Ottawa students, Sandy Hill is a vivacious neighbourhood, offering student apartments and all necessary amenities, while being in close proximity to both the University and Byward Market.
